The Only Apple Brandy Cocktails You’ll Need This Fall

Have you heard? Apple brandy is having a comeback. That’s right, the spirit as American as apple pie, apple brandy is growing in popularity across the country. Perfect for early Fall seasonal changes, apple brandy is this season’s go-to spirit. And we have the ideal line-up of apple brandy cocktail recipes to suit any type of weather. Made using our barrel-aged premium apple brandy, these drinks are all the cocktails you’ll need this fall.

What is Apple Brandy?

The history of apple brandy in America dates back to the 1600s when resourceful settlers created apple cider from plentiful apple orchards. A few decades later, Scotsman William Laird, adding his distillation knowledge to the fermenting of apples and the power of apple brandy, or Applejack, was born.

The term ‘Applejack’ descends from the practice of freeze distillation, or “jacking,” used by early brandy-makers. This method of distillation froze cider so the ice could be removed from the spirit, and the slush that remained was higher in alcohol content. Applejack and apple brandy were once synonymous and are still often used interchangeably as their differences remain small. While apple brandy fell out of fashion after prohibition, it’s primed for a resurgence in bars across the country, and we understand why.

Apple brandy exists in many versions around the world. You’ll find Calvados in France, Batzi in Switzerland, and Obstler in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, proving the popularity of the apple spirit is long-lasting and far-reaching.

Old Tennessee Distilling’s premium apple brandy has been slowly matured in barrels, and the result is a smooth, well-rounded flavor. Honey-coloured, this spirit collaborates well with other ingredients, making it an ideal base for many cocktails. Our apple brandy is rich and warm, and at 80 Proof and 40% alcohol content, it’ll get the party started no matter the weather.

The Tennessee Apple

Let’s start with an Old Tennessee Distilling Company classic. This cocktail is all-America, the only thing it’s missing is the star-spangled banner!

Ingredients:

  • 1 oz. Premium Apple Brandy
  • 1 oz. Dumplin Creek Apple Pie Moonshine
  • 3 oz. cranberry juice
  • A splash of grenadine

Combine the brandy, moonshine, and cranberry juice in a tall glass filled with ice. Top off with a splash of grenadine and stir well.

Apple Brandy Old Fashioned

Another classic with a twist. This is the ultimate gentlemanly drink. Enjoy around a log fire, or outside on a crisp night.

Ingredients:

  • 1.5 oz. Premium Apple Brandy
  • 1 sugar cube or 0.25 oz. of simple syrup
  • 2 dashes of Angostura Bitters
  • A splash of water

Put the sugar cube or simple syrup in a tumbler and cover with the bitters. Muddle (stir well) this until the sugar dissolves. Fill the glass with ice blocks and add the apple brandy. Finish off with a splash of water to your taste. The best garnish for an Old Fashioned is a twist of scorched orange peel, either in the glass or on the rim.

Apple Brandy Sour

We all know about Whiskey Sour, so why not shake things up and try an Apple Brandy Sour? This one’s for those friends who don’t take too many risks but still like to be the life of the party.

Ingredients:

  • 2 oz. Premium Apple Brandy
  • 0.75 oz. lemon juice
  • 0.5 oz. of simple syrup
  • 3 dashes of bitters

Add the simple syrup and bitters to a tumbler and stir. Pour the apple brandy over the ice blocks and finish it off with the lemon juice. Combine well. For an extra zesty glass, garnish with a slice of orange or grapefruit.
