National Gin and Tonic Day

Every year on April 9th we celebrate one of the most loved and well-known drinks – the Gin and Tonic. This simple cocktail only requires a few ingredients but is always a favorite. Today we’re sharing with you the history of this classic drink, how to make it yourself, and a few ways that you can celebrate National Gin and Tonic Day!

This History of Gin and Tonic

Gin and Tonic was first developed in the 1800s as a way to treat malaria in British soldiers who were stationed in India. The properties of the tonic water, which contained quinine, were found to be an effective treatment against the disease. However, tonic water alone has a very bitter taste which is why soldiers started adding gin to it. They later began including lemon and lime, leading to the classic G&T we know and love today.

How to Make a Classic Gin and Tonic

A gin and tonic is one of the easiest drinks to make, and only requires 3 ingredients! All you need is:

  • 3 ounces gin
  • 6 ounces tonic water
  • Lime (or lemon) wedge

To start, pour gin over ice in a glass. Top off with the tonic water and gently stir so that the ingredients are combined without losing any of the carbonation from the tonic water. Finally, garnish with a lime (or lemon) wedge and a squeeze of lime juice.

Ways to Celebrate Today

There are many ways you can celebrate National Gin and Tonic Day. One fun way you can mix up this classic drink is by incorporating new flavors. Try muddling fresh fruits like raspberries, mango, or oranges in your glass before mixing up your drink. You can also try a different gin than your usual go-to. We recommend our award-winning Dumplin Creek Gin for a smooth, citrus finish. Maybe it’s an old favorite of yours or you’re looking to give this drink a try; whatever the case, we’d love to see the ways you celebrate National Gin and Tonic Day.
