First, let’s get to know a little bit more about the history of this delicious drink. Hot buttered rum dates back to colonial America where it was popular due to the abundance of molasses available. Caribbean islands were covered in sugarcane plantations where molasses was produced as a by-product of the sugar. When molasses is fermented and distilled, it becomes the rum liquor we know and love. It wasn’t uncommon for colonists to experiment with making different cocktails with rum and the ingredients they had on hand. Hot buttered rum became a staple for its simple ingredients and smooth but sweet taste.
Hot buttered rum involves first making a butter mixture which can be stored for anytime use. To get started crafting your own, follow along with this recipe from the Food Network which serves around 8 – 10 cocktails and is sure to please!
Ingredients
Butter Mixture
- 2 sticks (1 cup) salted butter, at room temperature
- 1 cup packed brown sugar
- 1/2 cup honey
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
- 1/2 teaspoon ground allspice
Cocktail Mixture
- 16 to 20 ounces dark rum
- Boiling water, for serving
- Whipped cream, for serving, optional
Instructions
For the butter mixture, add all ingredients into a medium bowl and mix with a spatula until well combined. Transfer mixture into a container and refrigerate until ready to use. For the cocktail, add about two tablespoons of the butter mixture into each cup followed by 2 ounces of dark rum. We recommend our Black Mountain Spiced Rum for added flavor. Next, add enough boiling water in each cup to melt the butter and stir. Top with optional whipped cream and cinnamon and you’re ready to serve!
